14th year of an international competition for young pianists
Broumov Key (Broumovská klávesa) is one round international competition for young pianists up to 17 years of age. 14th annual will be organised from 3 till 5 May 2024 in Broumov Monastery. Concert of the laureates is scheduled during the Autumn 2024 in Suk Hall, Rudolfinum, Prague. Artistic director of the competition is Czech pianist Ivo Kahánek.
The aim of the Broumov Key is to organize a competition for children and young people with an appropriate professional platform in a broad international scope.
The whole idea is based on a proven system of children’s music education and a long tradition of children’s competitions in the Czech Republic. Young musicians here have unique possibility of mutual confrontation at international level with members of the jury, but also a contact with leading personalities of Czech and foreign „piano life“ and representatives of crucial musical institutions. During years 2016-2020 the competition had around 300 participants from Czech Republic, Poland, Slovak Republic, Hungary and Ukraine.

You can visit guided tours of the monastery, have a pleasant walk in the monastery garden, have a rest in a new monastery restaurant U Tří růží or in the Café Dientzenhofer, pleasant and inspiring place situated in the area of the former monastic grammar school.
So far there were ten successfully organized years of the competition. The year 2015 returned after two years into the area of the Broumov Monastery, which is currently newly revitalized (part of the building and garden).
The competition takes place in the new Dřevník multifunctional hall in the monastery garden, which has very favorable acoustic conditions and facilities for the organization. Plenty of practice classes are offered by the monastery halls, which are equipped with pianos and grand pianos. The monastery also offers accommodation for competitors in renovated monastic cells called the Guest House. The rooms are located directly in the monastery complex, so there is no need to leave the Broumov monastery at all, when moving to the competition hall or training rooms. The partner of the competition has been the company Drnek piana for several years now, providing a Steinway concert piano and a practice pianos Essex.
In addition to financial prizes, the best participants in the individual categories also receive a concert award, which is motivating and of great importance in their solo development. Traditionally, the competition offers finalists the opportunity to perform on one of the most prestigious concert stages in the country, the finalists of recent years had their Gala Concert of Laureates in the Suk Hall of the Prague Rudolfinum. The gala concert became an integral part of the competition. Other concert awards for the winners are the opportunity to perform at the Za poklady Broumovska festival, which offers performances to a selected laureate in support of the young generation and within the season of the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Mariánské lázně, where the selected laureate performs solo with the orchestra.
